In brief
Admiral Rob Bauer of NATO expresses apprehension regarding peace negotiations that could empower Russia, stressing the wider implications beyond Ukraine.
Admiral Rob Bauer, the chief military official of NATO, raised alarms on Saturday concerning any peace agreement that might allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to emerge victorious from the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at a European defense summit in Prague, Bauer argued that a favorable deal for Russia could significantly impair U.S. interests across the globe. “If you allow a nation like Russia to win, to come out of this as the victor, then it sets a concerning precedent for other autocratic regimes where the U.S. also holds interests,” he stated. While acknowledging the importance of Ukraine itself, Bauer emphasized the broader consequences such motions could entail.Former President Donald Trump, who claims he could resolve the war within a day, has not clarified his vision for peace. A proposed settlement by Vice President-elect JD Vance aligns with Kremlin assertions, suggesting Russia retain its captured territories and prohibiting Ukraine's NATO aspirations.Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for Trump's transition, defended the former president's return to power, stating that Americans trust him to restore global peace and stability. “When he returns to the White House, he will take the necessary actions to do just that,” she remarked on Saturday, alluding to a strengthened approach in foreign affairs.
