US Officials Report Ukraine Open to Peace Talks with Russia
US State Department claims Ukraine is ready to engage in discussions for a ceasefire with Russia, amidst escalating diplomatic efforts.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz are heading to Saudi Arabia for crucial talks with Ukrainian officials, as President Trump increases pressure on Zelensky to comply with ceasefire demands without a US security guarantee. Tensions escalated following a recent confrontation between Trump and Zelensky at the White House, where Trump accused Zelensky of lacking initiative to halt the ongoing conflict. Current estimates indicate that Russia controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory since its full-scale invasion commenced in February 2022.
The US State Department official noted the senior-level U.S. visit signals a willingness from Ukraine to advance discussions. Although Zelensky is visiting Saudi Arabia to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he will not formally participate in the talks with U.S. officials. Instead, Ukraine will be represented by his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, along with national security and foreign defense ministers.
In a video address, Zelensky expressed hope for positive developments towards peace and continued support for Ukraine, indicating he feels pressed by U.S. demands for concessions amidst the ongoing conflict. The urgency for results in terms of security assurances for Ukraine has placed Zelensky in a difficult position, as past ceasefire agreements have been breached by Russia without consequences.
While the U.S. has pushed for Ukraine to yield certain demands, there has been no corresponding pressure publicly directed towards Moscow that has been disclosed. Following the verbal exchange with Trump, Zelensky conveyed remorse over the incident and sought to mend relations with the U.S., his primary military ally. Trump’s special envoy later revealed that Zelensky sent an apology letter, indicating a sense of gratitude towards the U.S. role.
In Saudi Arabia, the U.S. delegation aims to create a comprehensive framework for peace while also re-evaluating a significant minerals deal, offering the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth mineral resources in exchange for vital security commitments. Trump noted that the U.S. is on the verge of reinstating intelligence support to Ukraine and is committed to ensuring meaningful dialogue takes place for progressing peace efforts in the region.
