**A Guatemalan émigré has been arrested after the violent incident on a subway train, highlighting urgent concerns about public safety.**

A man has been apprehended in New York following a horrific incident where a woman was set on fire aboard a subway train in Brooklyn. The police stated that the crime, described as "one of the most inhumane acts imaginable," occurred on Sunday, when the victim was inside a stationary F train. She was approached by a suspect who used a lighter to ignite her clothing, leading to her being "fully engulfed in flames within seconds." Despite the immediate intervention of officers who extinguished the fire, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Authorities are still piecing together a possible motive behind this unsettling attack. The woman's identity has not been disclosed, and so far no official charges have been filed against the suspect. At the time of the incident, which happened around 07:30 local time at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station, the victim was reported to be motionless, raising questions as to whether she may have been asleep. NYPD's Joseph Gulotta indicated that there was no prior interaction between the victim and the assailant, and they did not believe the two had any prior acquaintanceship.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that their attention was drawn to the alarming scene when officers patrolling an upper area of the station detected smoke. Upon investigation, they encountered a horrifying sight: a person engulfed in flames inside a train car. It was reported that the suspect fled the train but remained nearby, seated on a platform bench. As a result of their vigilant patrol, officers captured "clear and detailed" images of the suspect, which were later shared with the public by the NYPD.

Three teenagers, who were also using the subway, recognized the suspect and promptly called 911, providing critical information that led to his capture. He was arrested at the Herald Square station, close to the Empire State Building, and was found in possession of a lighter when taken into custody. The suspect, who immigrated from Guatemala in 2018, remains unnamed as investigations continue. "I want to commend the young individuals who reported this incident," Commissioner Tisch emphasized. "They saw something, they said something, and they acted decisively to assist."
