Tragic Loss: Olympic Champion Laura Dahlmeier Passes Away in Mountaineering Accident
Former biathlon star and Olympic champion, Laura Dahlmeier, tragically loses her life in an accident while climbing in Pakistan's Karakoram mountains.
Double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier, renowned for her passion for both sports and mountains, has died following a tragic climbing accident in Pakistan’s treacherous Karakoram mountain range. On July 28, Dahlmeier was involved in a severe rockfall at an altitude of around 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) during her climbing expedition. Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, promptly informed emergency services after the incident occurred.
Despite the swift response from rescue teams comprised of highly trained climbers from Germany and the United States, their efforts were thwarted by perilous weather conditions. Dahlmeier's management released a statement indicating that she likely passed away on the day of the accident. "It was Laura's clear and written wishes that in an instance such as this, no one should risk their own lives in order to rescue her," the statement said, echoing the sentiments of her family who requested her final wishes to be honored.
After a brief attempt to recover her body, efforts were ultimately suspended due to the extreme risk posed by ongoing rockfalls and unpredictable weather in the vicinity of Laila Peak. The heartfelt message from her management celebrated her the warmth and integrity that touched so many lives, reminding everyone to pursue their dreams and value authenticity.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation expressed profound sorrow, stating that Dahlmeier was "more than an Olympic champion" and credited her with possessing a spirited heart and visionary outlook. Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee, echoed the sentiment, deeming her loss "deeply shocking" for the entire Olympic movement, emphasizing that she would always be remembered fondly for her love of the mountains.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recognized Dahlmeier as an "ambassador" for Germany, a figure embodying peaceful coexistence and joy among diverse nations. An accomplished athlete, Dahlmeier competed in two Winter Olympics, achieving an impressive medal haul that includes two golds and one bronze during the 2018 Pyeongchang games, where she made history as the first woman to clinch gold in both the sprint and pursuit events. Additionally, she garnered 15 medals across five World Championships before her retirement in May 2019.
