The Israeli military has issued a sweeping evacuation notice for the southern Gaza Strip, indicating a possible resurgence of military activity in the region. This order, announced on Monday during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, brings further anguish to Palestinians, particularly in Rafah, which has already endured significant devastation due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The latest hostilities, reignited two weeks prior following the collapse of a months-long cease-fire, have led to severe dangers for civilians. Avichay Adraee, the spokesperson for the Israeli military's Arabic-language division, shared a map detailing the evacuation areas, which include Rafah and parts of neighboring Khan Younis, urging residents to relocate to the northern coastal shelters.
His statements outlined a renewed military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas's operational capabilities in these areas. Earlier this month, evacuation orders were also issued for various neighborhoods in Rafah, with the most recent communications echoing these warnings.
While the population of Rafah had been substantial, with hundreds of thousands before the conflict, much of the city now lies in ruins. The number of remaining residents when these orders were released was uncertain, with many choosing to disregard earlier evacuation requests in other areas of Gaza.
Since the onset of the hostilities that began with the Hamas-led attack in October 2023, the civilian population has faced relentless upheaval, resulting in many being forced into cramped, makeshift shelters. Israel resumed military actions against Hamas on March 18, following the failure to negotiate an extension of a cease-fire established in January. Although discussions with mediators to restore some form of cease-fire are ongoing, a resolution remains elusive.
