Toronto Pub Shooting Leaves Twelve Injured as Police Hunt for Suspects
A mass shooting at a pub in Toronto has led to twelve injuries, with authorities searching for three suspects who opened fire indiscriminately.
Three men armed with an assault rifle and handguns unleashed chaos at a Toronto pub late Friday night, injuring twelve individuals and prompting an active manhunt by police. The shooting occurred around 10:39 PM local time (03:39 GMT Saturday) near the Scarborough city centre. Six victims suffered gunshot wounds while others were injured due to broken glass and flying debris, although authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
According to Police Superintendent Paul MacIntyre, the suspects entered the pub and "opened fire indiscriminately," with the motive for the attack still under investigation. "This was a brazen and reckless act of violence that's really shaken our community and the city itself," MacIntyre remarked. Earlier reports indicated that one suspect was seen escaping the scene in a silver vehicle while wearing a black balaclava.
Victims, aged from their twenties to mid-fifties, were treated for their injuries at local hospitals. “By the grace of God, there have been no fatalities,” MacIntyre stated, describing the situation in the pub as "horrible" with shattered glass walls and blood on the floor, where some patrons had sought refuge in fear.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her deep concern for the victims and the community at large, noting, "It is troubling because of the magnitude of the shooting and the number of people hurt." Premier Doug Ford supported the ongoing investigation, voicing strong condemnation for the violent act.
This incident marks a significant uptick in injury numbers from past firearm incidents in the area, raising alarms among residents and officials as the city grapples with gun violence in a nation that typically boasts lower firearm homicide rates compared to the United States.
