Croatian Deputy PM Resigns Following Gun Shooting Incident from Moving Car
Josip Dabro resigns after controversial video surfaces, raising questions about government conduct and public safety.
In a shocking turn of events, Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister Josip Dabro has resigned after a disturbing video surfaced showing him firing a gun from a moving car. The footage depicts him laughing, singing along to music, and shooting through an open window in the dark, raising serious concerns about public safety and the integrity of government officials.
Dabro, who represents the hard-right nationalist party Homeland Movement, claimed the video was recorded several years ago and insisted that he was using training rounds. Nonetheless, the incident has sparked outrage, prompting the government to label his actions as "inappropriate and irresponsible."
In his resignation statement on Facebook, Dabro, who also held the position of Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, stated that he did not want to detract from the government’s work. He also mentioned facing "significant pressure and threats" about the upcoming reforms within his department.
The footage emerged just after a pivotal election, where President Zoran Milanovic was re-elected for a second term, garnering nearly 75% of the votes against his opponent Dragan Primorac. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, whose Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party is in a coalition with Dabro’s Homeland Movement, expressed his disappointment regarding Milanovic's victory, stating that the president "offers nothing" and chose not to extend congratulations.
This incident is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the Croatian government, following the dismissal of Health Minister Vili Bros last November amid a corruption investigation. As the coalition grapples with these challenges, questions loom over the future stability and conduct of its leaders.
