Vietnamese Beauty Queen Faces Arrest for Promoting Fake Fiber Gummies
A reality star and former pageant winner is in hot water over fraudulent product claims.
The Vietnamese authorities have placed Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, a prominent beauty queen and social media influencer, under arrest following allegations of consumer fraud related to the promotion of a supposed high-fiber supplement. The former Miss Grand International, who rose to fame in 2021, had heavily advertised Kera Supergreens Gummies through her social media platforms, claiming they contained fiber equivalent to that found in a plate of vegetables.
However, a wave of public dissatisfaction emerged when independent lab tests revealed that the product only contained a mere 16mg of fiber per gummy, significantly lower than the 200mg that had been claimed. This initiated an investigation, uncovering that the product's manufacturing involved subpar ingredients and misrepresented nutritional information.
Ms. Nguyen collaborated with fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc in marketing the gummies, leading to a major consumer outcry when the truth came to light. As part of the investigation, authorities had previously fined all three influencers for promoting the misleading product and required public apologies.
The situation escalated in March when Pham and Hang Du Muc were arrested, along with company officials linked to the product, facing charges including producing counterfeit goods and defrauding customers. This week, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien was also taken into custody for her role in this deception.
Reports indicate that over 100,000 boxes of the gummies were sold before distribution was halted due to the unfolding scandal. Following her pageant victory, Tien garnered immense popularity in Vietnam, landing numerous sponsorships and reality show appearances, as well as receiving commendations from government officials, further complicating her fall from grace.
