Starmer Commits to British Troops for Ukraine Peace Deal
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expresses readiness to deploy UK troops to support Ukraine in any peace negotiations with Russia.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer made a significant announcement on Sunday, stating he is "ready and willing" to deploy British troops to ensure Ukraine's security as part of any upcoming peace deal. This declaration comes ahead of an emergency meeting of European leaders set for Monday in Paris, aimed at coordinating a unified response to President Trump’s recent engagement with Russia over the Ukraine conflict.
In an article published in The Daily Telegraph, Starmer emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting that committing British troops was not a decision he took lightly but was essential to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty long-term. He noted that the end of the war must not lead to a mere pause before further Russian aggression.
The timing of Starmer's statement aligns with an impending meeting between American and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, where preliminary discussions to potentially conclude the war are scheduled. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted at a broader dialogue that would encompass Ukraine and Europe, although Ukraine confirmed they would not be participating in the Saudi talks.
During the upcoming Paris meeting, Starmer will join leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and key EU and NATO officials to deliberate on the war and European security strategies. Starmer plans to advocate for increased military expenditure and a more prominent NATO role, reaffirming that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible.”
Simultaneously, Starmer is preparing for future discussions with President Trump, with the intent to foster closer collaboration between Europe and the United States in pursuit of a lasting peace deal. He underscored the necessity of a U.S. security guarantee to deter future aggression from Russia, emphasizing that "only the U.S. can prevent Putin from attacking again."
