50 States, 50 Solutions: Embracing Car-Free Living in Arizona

A groundbreaking community outside Phoenix promotes a lifestyle without cars, exemplifying innovative urban development.

Culdesac Tempe offers a unique, car-free living experience, attracting families who prioritize a pedestrian-friendly environment.

In a notable shift towards sustainable urban living, Culdesac Tempe, located near Phoenix, Arizona, is pioneering a new model of development that emphasizes car-free lifestyles. Residents here experience charming walkways, eclectic shops, and inviting white stucco buildings, all thoughtfully arranged around serene courtyards.

One resident, Andre Rouhani, along with his partner Gabriela Reyes, made a significant life change after touring the community. The couple, who are parents to two dogs and a young child, willingly parted ways with their car upon discovering that the development does not include resident parking. “Long story short, we decided that all the pros outweigh the cons,” Rouhani stated in a recent interview. His family moved into Culdesac in December and praises their new community, calling it “the best place I’ve ever lived.”

Culdesac Tempe, designed with inspiration from timeless Mediterranean towns, stands as a testament to a promising future for urban living in America. This innovative neighborhood is part of the “50 States, 50 Fixes” initiative, which highlights local solutions to pressing environmental challenges. As more communities explore similar paths, Culdesac may represent a blueprint for future developments aimed at reducing reliance on cars and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
