Pakistan Seeks U.S. Mediation as Tensions with India Escalate
In the wake of Indian airstrikes, Pakistan's Defense Minister expresses hope for U.S. involvement in conflict resolution.
On May 7, 2025, the Pakistani defense minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, announced that he would welcome further U.S. engagement to mitigate the escalating crisis with India. His comments followed India’s airstrike on nine locations within Pakistan and the Pakistani-administered Kashmir, a response to a terrorist attack that reportedly claimed twenty lives.
Asif acknowledged Pakistan’s military capabilities, noting that they had already engaged by downing several Indian aircraft and drones. However, he indicated a willingness for restraint if India refrains from additional aggressive actions. Asif’s statement emphasized the current application of restraint, stating, “If the same situation arises tonight, the situation could flare up very easily.”
In light of these escalating tensions, Asif has also called for an independent investigation into the recent events, highlighting the fragile state of peace in the region and the critical role that U.S. diplomatic efforts could play.
