In the West Bank, the holy month of Ramadan, typically marked by vibrant markets and joyous celebrations, has been overshadowed by despair as military operations displace tens of thousands of Palestinians. An Israeli offensive that began in January has led to one of the largest civilian displacements the region has seen in decades, uprooting around 40,000 individuals from their homes, particularly in areas like Jenin and Tulkarm.
The atmosphere in these once-bustling cities is drastically altered; the laughter of children has been replaced by a haunting silence. Mahmoud Sukkar, a father of four, expressed the tragedy succinctly: "Ramadan used to shine; now, it’s just darkness." Traditional practices such as community meals during iftar are now scarce, with families often relying on donated food for breaking their fast.
In this militarized environment, nearly 50 lives have been lost since the operation's inception, as Israeli forces, for the first time in years, have deployed tanks and established a military presence in Jenin and Tulkarm. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains that the objective of the operation is to combat terrorism.
