Mother Faces Charges of Kidnapping in Daughter's Mysterious Disappearance in South Africa
Mother Kelly Smith stands trial for her alleged role in the abduction of her six-year-old daughter Joshlin, missing since last year.
In a controversial trial that has captivated South Africa, Kelly Smith is set to face charges related to the alleged abduction of her six-year-old daughter, Joshlin, who vanished over a year ago in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town. Smith, along with her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their associate Steveno van Rhyn, were taken into custody following the child's mysterious disappearance in February 2022.
The loss of Joshlin ignited a wave of terror and concern throughout South Africa, prompting extensive searches that, despite widespread media attention and community efforts, have not led to her discovery. All three defendants have denied allegations including human trafficking and kidnapping.
Initially, Smith claimed that Joshlin went missing after she left her in the care of Appollis. However, prosecutors allege she is responsible for having "sold, delivered, or exchanged" the girl, casting doubts on her account of the events surrounding her daughter's disappearance.
Amid the desperate search for Joshlin, the case took a new turn when Lorentia Lombaard, a former co-accused, became a state witness, increasing scrutiny on Smith. The campaign to find the girl captured significant attention, even prompting South Africa's Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, to offer a reward of one million rand (approximately $54,000) for her safe return.
The trial is scheduled to take place from March 3 to March 28 at a multi-purpose center in Saldanha, specially converted into a high court to accommodate the proceedings and ensure community participation. The choice of venue highlights the case's importance and the community's desire for transparency as it unfolds.
