Pope Francis Makes Steady Recovery as Vatican Reports Health Improvements
Vatican City announces positive updates on the health of Pope Francis following his hospital discharge.
Pope Francis is showing encouraging signs of recovery as he convalesces at the Vatican guesthouse after being discharged from Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome, where he underwent treatment for pneumonia and associated infections. Despite facing life-threatening challenges, including a breathing crisis and bronchial spasms, the pontiff emerged from the hospital on March 23, beginning a period of rest and rehabilitation.
As of Tuesday, the Vatican announced that the pope's laboratory results were normal and a recent X-ray indicated a slight improvement in his lung condition. Though he still relies on oxygen, he is gradually able to manage without it for short periods. Motor and respiratory therapy appear to be beneficial, helping him regain his strength and speech clarity.
Since his departure from the hospital, Francis has refrained from public appearances, apart from a brief greeting from a hospital balcony that illustrated the serious nature of his recent health crisis. During that appearance, his voice was notably weak, and his physical limitations were evident.
The medical team that treated him has advised continued rest, recommending a minimum two-month convalescence, and it appears the pope is following their advice closely. Though he has not entertained visitors, he celebrates Mass daily with fellow priests and remains engaged with his responsibilities.
Even in recovery, Pope Francis has continued his duties by approving the canonization of saints and appointing bishops, while also offering prayers for the victims of a recent earthquake in Southeast Asia. In his Sunday Angelus message, delivered in writing, he reflected on his own healing process, encouraging the faithful to embrace Lenten reflections on recovery both spiritually and physically.
Pope Francis’ recovery journey is ongoing, and the Vatican remains optimistic about his gradual return to health.
