WHO Condemns Attacks on Humanitarian Facilities in Gaza Amidst Escalating Conflict
The World Health Organization raises alarms over Israeli military actions jeopardizing humanitarian efforts in central Gaza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a strong condemnation following Israeli military actions that it claims have endangered its operations in central Gaza. According to the UN agency, Israeli forces targeted premises housing WHO staff and their families in Deir al-Balah, resulting in the destruction of essential facilities. The WHO reported that its staff residence was directly attacked multiple times, exposing families, including children, to significant danger and trauma.
As the conflict escalated, Israeli military operations in Deir al-Balah triggered mass displacement, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians to evacuate their homes. Humanitarian reports indicate that malnutrition is becoming increasingly prevalent, with the Hamas-run health ministry noting that at least 19 people have died from starvation since Saturday.
The Israeli army began active combat in Deir al-Balah, issuing warnings for civilians to relocate further south, essentially blocking various movement corridors establishing a militarized presence throughout the area. The WHO, despite evacuation alerts, emphasized the need to protect its staff, stating that understanding the urgency of the situation, they will maintain their operational stance in the beleaguered region.
The agency revealed that during the recent military incursions, its personnel experienced aggressive treatment, including being handcuffed and interrogated during the conflict. While two WHO staff members and two family members were detained, three were released; however, one staff member remains unaccounted for.
Damages to the WHO’s primary warehouse from the assaults severely handicapped its ability to assist the millions of residents grappling with a collapsing healthcare landscape. Health services are reportedly overwhelmed, with 87.8% of Gaza territory under Israeli evacuation orders, greatly restricting humanitarian access.
While there has been no response from the Israeli military regarding the WHO's allegations of attacks on its facilities, media reports indicate that military operations aim to establish control over Deir al-Balah, amid concerns for potential hostages in the area.
In light of the ongoing conflict that began after Hamas's attack on southern Israel in October 2023, the health ministry in Gaza has reported horrific casualty figures, adding strain to an already tumultuous situation. Reports indicate that over 59,000 people have died due to the ongoing strife, creating an urgent need for humanitarian intervention.
