Swiss Citizen Dies in Iranian Custody Amid Espionage Allegations

A Swiss national has reportedly died in an Iranian prison, sparking outrage and highlighting the risks associated with espionage accusations in the country.

According to Iranian state media, a Swiss citizen, suspected of spying, tragically died in custody at a prison in Semnan. The Tasnim News Agency reported that the man allegedly "committed suicide" on Thursday while incarcerated with another inmate. Efforts by prison personnel to revive him were reportedly in vain. Mizan News Agency, associated with Iran's judiciary, provided limited details regarding the individual but reiterated that he had been arrested on espionage charges following actions by Iranian security forces. The case is currently under further investigation. It is noted that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have detained numerous dual citizens and foreigners over the past years, predominantly under espionage and security claims.
