The Art of Mathematics: A Journey with "Mathemalchemy"
Experience the intersection of math and art through the innovative installation "Mathemalchemy," brought to life by prominent mathematician Ingrid Daubechies.
Ingrid Daubechies, a distinguished mathematician at Duke University, has reimagined the way we perceive mathematics through her innovative project, “Mathemalchemy.” This traveling multimedia exhibition captures the essence of mathematical artistry, connecting math enthusiasts and art lovers alike. Known for her flavorful pi-shaped cookies, crafted from both sweet and savory recipes, Dr. Daubechies aims to blend culinary delights with mathematical exploration.
As Pi Day approaches on March 14, 2025, Dr. Daubechies is gearing up to celebrate by baking her distinctive pi cookies while preparing to visit the University of Quebec in Montreal. There, she will host exclusive tours of "Mathemalchemy," a passion project that has consumed her artistic endeavors over the past five years. The upcoming exhibition will feature a public talk aptly titled “Mathematics to the Rescue of Art Curators,” showcasing the crucial role mathematics plays in the artistic realm.
“Mathemalchemy,” which made its grand debut in 2022 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., presents a stunning 360-degree diorama that spans 20 feet long and stands 9.5 feet high. Created in collaboration with talented fiber sculptor Dominique Ehrmann and a remarkable team of 24 artistic mathematicians, the installation challenges traditional perceptions of both disciplines, inviting attendees to see equations not only as calculations but as forms of creative expression. With plans to tour various venues, "Mathemalchemy" is set to inspire future generations about the unbreakable bond between mathematics and art, reinforcing the theme of this year’s International Day of Mathematics focused on creativity.
