Assassination of Iranian Judges Sparks Outrage and Investigation

The killing of two supreme court judges in Tehran raises questions about security and political motives behind the attack.

Senior Iranian judges Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh were shot dead in their court, prompting a state investigation into possible motives and accomplices behind what is deemed a premeditated assassination.

In a shocking incident on Saturday morning, two eminent judges from Iran's supreme court were fatally shot in Tehran, leading to widespread concern over judicial safety and political motivations. The victims, Ali Razini, aged 71, and Mohammad Moghiseh, aged 68, were killed when an armed assailant breached court security. Reports indicate that the assailant subsequently took his own life while trying to escape the scene.

The judiciary's media office labeled the incident as a premeditated assassination. Both judges have long histories within Iran's judiciary system, notorious for their roles in enforcing harsh penalties against opponents of the Islamic regime since the 1980s. The incident raises an alarming spotlight on the ongoing concerns regarding security measures within state institutions.

Initial reports suggest that the attacker was not linked to any cases pending in the supreme court, leading authorities to probe potential conspiratorial networks behind the attack. Razini, a prominent figure regarded as one of Iran’s top judges, had previously survived an assassination attempt in 1998, while Moghiseh has faced international sanctions for alleged human rights violations.

Both judges had partaken in high-stakes decisions within the court, including the confirmation of death penalties, making their untimely deaths particularly poignant amidst an already heavy climate of fear and oppression. Investigators are actively seeking to uncover any possible connections or accomplices involved in what has become a central issue within Iran’s judicial and political landscape.
