Sherpa Teen Completes Climb of All 14 Highest Peaks, Elevates Sherpa Community
Nima Rinji Sherpa from Nepal has made history as the youngest person to summit all 14 of the world’s highest peaks, known as the "8,000ers," by reaching the top of Mount Shishapangma. This courageous achievement highlights the efforts and skills of Sherpas in mountaineering—a field where they assume significant risk yet often remain unacknowledged. At 17, Nima had set his sights on this ambitious goal, but his journey took a detour after a tragic avalanche claimed the lives of several climbers, including his mentor, Tenjen Lama Sherpa. Despite the setback and personal loss, Nima continued his pursuit, driven by a desire to honor his mentor and amplify the contributions of Sherpas in high-altitude expeditions. Finally, at the age of 18, he reached the summit, breaking the previous record set by Mingma Gyabu Sherpa at 30 years old and shining a light on the vital role his community plays in mountaineering.
Completion of his ascent is verified by Rakesh Gurung of Nepal's Department of Tourism. Nima’s accomplishment is not just a personal triumph but a significant moment aimed at bringing attention to Sherpa communities who facilitate many mountaineers’ dreams while putting their lives on the line. His feat is a bittersweet tribute to those who lost their lives on the mountains, and a rallying call for acknowledgment and appreciation of the risks Sherpas endure. With this historic climb, Nima Rinji Sherpa cements his and his community’s place in the annals of mountaineering history.
