On the morning of Thursday, February 14, 2025, Munich was rocked by a violent incident when a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove his Mini Cooper into a crowded union demonstration, injuring nearly 40 individuals. Eyewitnesses reported a chilling moment as the vehicle accelerated towards the marchers and crashed into them, prompting immediate police response. Authorities have revealed that the driver confessed to intentionally targeting the crowd.

The attack unfolded shortly before 10:30 a.m. as police officers observed the driver maneuvering through traffic in an apparent effort to reach the protestors. Reports indicate that the vehicle sped up, causing panic among attendees of the union march, which was organized by Verdi to support public sector workers amid ongoing strike actions. In the chaos, law enforcement fired a precautionary shot during the arrest of the driver.

Emergency services, including ambulances and helicopters, swiftly arrived at the scene as authorities established a temporary command center to gather information and evidence. The police urged witnesses to provide any video footage or photographs of the attack via a designated online portal. By late Thursday, the wrecked vehicle was removed from the crime scene and impounded for investigation.

On Friday, officials confirmed that 36 individuals sustained injuries, with several of them being children. Among them, a 12-year-old girl suffered severe injuries and remained in intensive care. The tragic event has drawn attention from high-ranking officials, including Bavarian governor Markus Söder, German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter, who paid their respects at the crash site.

As the country gears up for federal elections slated for just ten days later, this tragic incident is expected to influence the political landscape, particularly discussions surrounding immigration policies and national security. The police continue to investigate the incident, seeking to determine if anyone else may have been involved in this distressing act of violence targeting innocent citizens.
