In a significant ruling, a German court sentenced five individuals on Thursday for their roles in a conspiracy to kidnap Health Minister Karl Lauterbach during a live television event in 2022. The culprits, identified with the far-right group “United Patriots,” sought to exploit a fabricated power outage to create chaos and restore a historical constitution granting absolute authority to a Kaiser.
Following a lengthy trial lasting nearly two years, the court found the defendants guilty of terrorism, treason, and possession of illegal weapons, including firearms and explosives. Speaking from Koblenz, Jörn Müller, the court's spokesperson, reaffirmed the judiciary's commitment to maintaining democratic order through fair legal procedures.
The sentences handed down reflected the severity of their offenses, with the group's main instigator, aged 46, receiving an eight-year prison term. A 77-year-old woman, noted for her disruptive antisemitic remarks during the trial, was sentenced to seven years and nine months. The remaining members, all in their 50s, were given prison terms ranging from two years and ten months to six and a half years.
Bound to a nationalist ideology, these individuals belonged to the Reichsbürger movement, a faction that contests the legitimacy of contemporary Germany. Their plot, while containing echoes of a more extensive conspiracy involving another prominent figure, was carried out with alarming detail, including efforts to accumulate firearms and explosives.
Following their arrest, police uncovered substantial stockpiles of low-grade explosives meant to disrupt the country's energy infrastructure. Law enforcement intervened as the suspects attempted to procure AK-47 rifles and military-grade equipment from undercover officers.
In response to the court’s decision, Health Minister Lauterbach expressed gratitude towards the police force for safeguarding him and highlighted the state's effectiveness in countering extremist threats.
