Ukrainian Forces Continue Resistance in Occupied Russian Territory
Amidst ongoing conflict, Ukraine's military asserts its presence in Kursk, defying reports of full Russian control.
Ukrainian military leaders have confirmed their forces are still actively defending a segment of territory inside Russia that they captured nearly a year ago. In August 2024, Ukraine initiated a bold incursion into the Kursk region, claiming over 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of land previously held by Russia. Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky reported that approximately 10,000 Russian troops are striving to eliminate this foothold.
While Russian officials have claimed complete recapture of the Kursk region, Syrsky contended that about 90 square kilometers (56 square miles) remain under Ukrainian control. In a press briefing, he declared a commitment to intensify military operations against Russian forces, stating, "Of course, we will continue. Given that we are not fighting against the population, we are fighting and destroying purely military targets."
The initial phase of Ukraine's campaign saw the capture of numerous villages, establishing a buffer zone to limit Russian troop deployments in crucial eastern Ukraine sectors, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, the momentum of Ukraine’s advances has diminished, attributed to the rapid influx of Russian reinforcements, including substantial numbers from North Korea.
Recent months have seen Ukrainian positions in Kursk come under significant pressure, with Russia deploying around 70,000 troops alongside relentless drone assaults in a concerted effort to reclaim territory. Amidst this backdrop, North Korea reportedly sent an estimated 11,000 soldiers to bolster Russian defenses against the Ukrainian incursion. Western intelligence indicated that over 1,000 North Korean troops suffered casualties within just three months as the fighting escalated.
In a recent development, North Korea has pledged assistance by sending mine-clearing units and construction personnel to aid in the recovery of infrastructure damaged during the conflict in the Kursk region.
