Growing Threats to L.G.B.T.Q. Community in Ivory Coast Raise Alarms

Recent assaults on L.G.B.T.Q. individuals in what was once a beacon of tolerance in West Africa are quickly eroding the sense of safety within the community.

A spate of violent incidents targeted at the L.G.B.T.Q. community in Ivory Coast is alarming advocates and activists, signaling a dangerous shift in a country known for its relative acceptance.

Ivory Coast, historically viewed as a refuge for L.G.B.T.Q. individuals amidst a backdrop of West African intolerance, is now grappling with a series of violent attacks that pose an imminent threat to its gay and transgender population. In recent months, a troubling wave of assaults has surfaced, as persistent online campaigns by prominent social media influencers have incited followers to actively "hunt" members of the L.G.B.T.Q. community.

The capital city of Abidjan has witnessed many instances of mob violence and public intimidation targeting specifically effeminate gay men, known colloquially as "woubis." This derogatory term has gained traction among those perpetuating violence, escalating to the point where supporters at a local soccer match displayed a banner filled with homophobic slurs, signaling a deepening culture of hostility.

In addition to street violence, legislative developments are also concerning. A rising political figure, aligned with President Alassane Ouattara's party, has pledged to introduce legislation aimed at "countering" the perceived threat of homosexuality, further institutionalizing discrimination.

Human rights organizations express grave concerns that the societal pressures faced by L.G.B.T.Q. individuals in neighboring countries like Ghana and Nigeria are now becoming entrenched within Ivory Coast. Carlos Idibouo, a notable L.G.B.T.Q. activist in the country, poignantly remarked, "Ivory Coast was an oasis of peace for the community. Now we wonder, are people safe?" Activists fear that without urgent intervention, the situation could spiral into widespread violence and discrimination, challenging the nation's image as a progressive safe haven.
