Israel Claims Strike Kills Iranian Military Leader Linked to Hamas Attack
Tensions Heighten as Israel Targets Senior Iranian Commander Amid Ongoing Conflict
Israel has reported the elimination of Saeed Izadi, a senior figure associated with Iran’s military and instrumental in planning the October 7 assault by Hamas on southern Israel. The strike, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Qom, is characterized by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a significant operational success. IDF chief Eyal Zamir emphasized that Izadi was "one of the orchestrators" behind the attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties, alongside numerous abductions into Gaza.
Izadi, while reportedly leading the Palestine Corps of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was said to facilitate military coordination between Iranian leaders and Hamas factions. As the IDF pointed out, this operation against him could be seen as a response to previous incidents, including an airstrike in April 2024, which narrowly spared Izadi while claiming the lives of several other Quds Force leaders.
In an additional claim on the same day, Israel stated that it also killed Behnam Shahriyari, another commander of the Quds Force, during a drone attack in western Iran. Shahriyari was believed to be in charge of transportation logistics for missiles destined for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
As the conflict between Israel and Iran enters a precarious stage, with both sides intensifying strikes, Israel has targeted military infrastructure while Iran has allegedly struck near its nuclear facilities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned any potential US involvement, warning of severe repercussions, while former President Donald Trump weighed in, suggesting that the U.S. could launch attacks on Iran over its nuclear-related negotiations.
The ongoing violence has inflicted heavy casualties, with Iranian authorities reporting over 430 deaths, including military personnel, while Israeli fatalities tally to at least 25. As combat escalates, global watch over the evolving situation remains critical.
