UK to Host Exclusive 2035 Women’s World Cup Bid Confirmed
UK becomes the only contender for the 2035 Women’s World Cup, according to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The United Kingdom is officially positioned to host the 2035 Women's World Cup after FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced that their joint proposal is the only ‘valid’ bid received for the tournament. In March, the home nations expressed their interest, complying with FIFA's requirement for the World Cup to be hosted in Europe or Africa in this cycle.
Competing nations had until a recent deadline to submit bids, and despite Spain's federation president Rafael Louzan stating intentions to collaborate with Portugal and Morocco on a joint proposal, no such submission was made by the deadline. Infantino, addressing Uefa's congress in Belgrade, confirmed that the USA will host the 2031 edition, making the UK's bid the flagship for 2035.
“This path opens up opportunities for the Women’s World Cup in both 2031 and 2035 in exceptional nations, further enhancing the development of women’s football worldwide,” commented Infantino.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed pride regarding the UK's exclusive status and acknowledged the significant work ahead. Formal bids must be finalized by winter, with host confirmations to be decided at a FIFA congress in 2026. Infantino also highlighted that the 2031 tournament will expand to 48 teams, enhancing participation and competition in the women’s game. If confirmed, this will mark the second occasion the World Cup is hosted in the UK, with the last being the men's tournament in 1966.
