**Zimbabwe's Silence: A Nation Grapples with Unrest**

As Zimbabweans stay indoors, protests fizzle against President Mnangagwa's regime.

Despite calls for widespread demonstrations, citizens favor quiet resistance amidst heavy police presence.

The national protest aimed at compelling President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign has devolved into a significant shutdown across Zimbabwe, as residents opted for caution rather than confrontation. A heavy security presence deterred what could have been a large demonstration, resulting in only a handful of protesters marching under the banner of disgruntled war veterans accusing Mnangagwa of corruption and an excessive grip on power.

Notably, the leader of the protest, Blessed Geza, criticized the low turnout on social media and implored Zimbabweans not to succumb to fear. Since ascending to power in 2017 following a coup that unseated long-serving leader Robert Mugabe, Mnangagwa is currently serving his second and final term, with rumors swirling about potential term extensions to 2030.

Videos shared across social media depicted intensified police action, including the use of teargas, as authorities sought to quell the unrest at specific gathering points like the President Robert Mugabe Square. Among the few demonstrators was a 63-year-old woman on crutches voicing concerns for her family's future, and expressing hopes for Vice-President Constantine Chiwenga to succeed Mnangagwa.

While the ruling Zanu-PF party dismissed claims of a protest rift, political analysts pointed out the event's significance as a collective expression of discontent. The streets of various cities reflected the shutdown's impact, with most businesses closed, schools vacated, and public transport services markedly reduced.

Local clergy have advocated for moderation, reminding the populace of the fragile state of the nation. Many citizens expressed apprehension about a potential descent into civil conflict, with concerns rising over Mnangagwa's alleged aspirations to breach constitutional term limits, stirring tensions further.

Despite assurances from the president regarding his intentions to step down in three years, skepticism lingers among the populace. Geza, a veteran of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, has vocally challenged Mnangagwa, pressing for his removal with a fervor that underscores the deep divisions within the political landscape. As the nation observes a tense silence, the struggle for Zimbabwe's future continues on multiple fronts.
