Paramilitary Forces Execute Massacre in Southern Sudan
In a brutal assault, paramilitary fighters reportedly kill over 100 civilians, including children, as Sudan's civil conflict escalates.
In the latest wave of violence in Sudan, paramilitary forces are accused of executing more than 100 civilians, according to reports from the Sudan Doctors Network. The massacre occurred in the city of Nahud, where Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.), a paramilitary group, attacked on Thursday, claiming they were targeting the Sudanese military. Reports indicate that at least 21 children and 15 women were among the dead, contributing to a staggering death toll of over 542 civilians in the region within a matter of weeks.
U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk expressed grave concern over the situation, warning that the ongoing conflict presents unparalleled human suffering. “The horror unfolding in Sudan knows no bounds,” he stated, highlighting the continuous threat of bloodshed as the R.S.F. escalates its military efforts, particularly in Darfur, where they have established significant authority.
The R.S.F. had previously suffered a setback when they were expelled from Khartoum, the capital, in March. However, the current offensive illustrates their ambition to dominate southern territories and reinforces fears of further atrocities as the situation deteriorates. Eyewitness accounts and the Sudan Doctors Network report that in addition to the killings, the paramilitary fighters engaged in extensive looting, targeting medical facilities and resources essential for the local population.
As the international community watches with growing concern, many are calling for an urgent response to halt the violence and address the escalating humanitarian crisis enveloping Sudan.
