Malala Yousafzai: Women's Rights Under Siege in Afghanistan
Malala warns of alarming erosion of women's rights since Taliban's return to power.
A symbol of resilience, Malala Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012, has turned her focus to the plight of women in Afghanistan following the Taliban's resurgence in 2021. The swift decline in women's rights, which now includes prohibitions on singing and enforced dress codes, has left many Afghan women trapped in despair. "I never imagined that the rights of women would be compromised so easily,” stated Malala during an interview with BBC Asian Network.
Since the Taliban regained control, reports from various organizations point to what the UN describes as "gender apartheid," resulting in millions of Afghan girls out of school and strict regulations barring women from public life unless accompanied by a male guardian. Malala expressed deep concern over the extreme measures imposed by the Taliban, remarking, “The restrictions are just so extreme that it does not even make sense to anybody.”
In response to the alarming situation, Malala is taking action through her role as executive producer of the upcoming documentary, "Bread & Roses." This film, directed by Sahra Mani, tells the stories of three Afghan women—Zahra, an ex-dentist rendered unable to practice; Taranom, forced to flee; and Sharifa, who lost her job and independence. Malala emphasizes that this film represents the stories of an entire generation of Afghan women.
Amid harsh conditions, Malala emphasizes the courage displayed by Afghan women, who continue to resist and protest despite escalating risks. She expresses hope that the documentary will not only raise awareness but also galvanize international support for restoring women's rights in Afghanistan.
Malala invokes a powerful metaphor with the film's title; "Bread is a symbol of freedom," stressing that access to education and livelihoods can empower women to reclaim their independence. The struggle for rights remains ongoing, with Malala urging people worldwide to stand in solidarity with those fighting for their freedoms in Afghanistan.
The documentary "Bread & Roses" will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting November 22, and Malala aims to keep the stories of these women in the forefront of global consciousness.
