Xi and Putin Strengthen Ties Amid US Leadership Change
Amidst geopolitical shifts, Chinese President Xi and Russian President Putin reaffirm their partnership in a tense global landscape.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a pivotal video call mere hours after Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday. This meeting, lasting approximately one-and-a-half hours, was marked by a mutual pledge to elevate bilateral relations to "greater heights," as reported by state media from both nations. Putin affectionately referred to Xi as his "dear friend," emphasizing that the strategic partnership is built on "friendship, mutual trust, and support," despite prevailing external pressures.
During the call, Xi urged Putin to work towards "deepening strategic coordination, firming up mutual support, and safeguarding legitimate interests." This dialogue comes at a time when Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on China, labeling it an "abuser," and hinting at "big trouble" for Moscow unless progress is made in resolving the Ukraine conflict. However, Putin asserted that any resolution regarding Ukraine must uphold Russia's interests, as stated by foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov following the call.
Even amidst accusations that Beijing is bolstering Russia's military capabilities through critical supplies, trade between the two nations has surged to an unprecedented $240 billion (£191 billion) in 2023, a notable increase of over 64% since 2021—prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ushakov indicated that both leaders are open to fostering constructive relations with the United States on a mutually beneficial and respectful basis, contingent upon the Trump administration's interest in engagement.
The call also covered a range of other international matters, including the dynamics in the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan. While Xi's ensuing initiatives to collaborate with Putin reflect an intention to counteract "external uncertainties," specifics remained unaddressed. Last week, Xi had a conversation with Trump, which the U.S. president characterized as a "very good" dialogue that touched upon various topics such as trade, fentanyl, and TikTok. As of yet, Putin has not spoken directly with Trump, although he did offer congratulations via state television before the inauguration.
