Collision Chaos: Dozens Injured in Strasbourg Tram Accident

An alarming tram collision in Strasbourg leaves at least 30 people injured as investigations unfold.

A significant tram accident in Strasbourg's central station on Saturday resulted in injuries for at least 30 individuals, following a collision between two trams. Emergency services responded promptly as authorities investigate the incident's cause.

In a dramatic turn of events at Strasbourg's central station, chaos ensued when two trams collided, resulting in at least 30 injuries on Saturday. Eyewitness accounts and social media footage captured the alarming moments, revealing smoke and panic as the incident unfolded.

Preliminary reports suggest that the collision occurred when one tram unexpectedly switched tracks and crashed into a stationary tram, with some accounts indicating that one tram was reversing at the time of the accident. Officials have confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched, acknowledging that there were no fatalities reported thus far.

Strasbourg's mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, addressed the media on-site, confirming the collision but indicating that the exact circumstances remain unclear. Urging the public to be patient until investigative findings are released, she emphasized the importance of understanding what led to this alarming incident.

One eyewitness, Johan, recounted the moment of impact to the AFP news agency, describing a loud crash, while another individual reported that the tram doors were dislodged upon impact. In light of the emergency, the Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service took to social media platform X, urging onlookers to avoid the area to facilitate access for first responders.

Rene Cellier, director of the rescue service, elaborated that while the majority of non-fatal injuries involved trauma, other injuries included scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. In total, around 100 individuals reported to medical personnel for evaluation, with the service's director noting that approximately 50 emergency vehicles and 130 firefighters responded, indicating the potential for a more tragic outcome.

Emmanuel Auneau, director of CTS—Strasbourg’s public transport authority—remarked that while both tram operators emerged without physical injuries, they were understandably shaken by the incident. As the investigation continues, the community of Strasbourg is left to grapple with the aftermath of this alarming event.
