TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A drone launched from Yemen by the Houthi militant group struck Israel’s Ramon International Airport on Sunday, causing flight disruptions as airspace over southern Israel was closed, according to the Israeli military.
At least one drone successfully penetrated airport defenses and hit the passenger hall. While some drones were intercepted outside of Israel by air defense systems, reports confirm light injuries and significant panic among travelers.
The attack is the audacious response of the Houthis following an Israeli airstrike that killed their Prime Minister and other officials in Sanaa two weeks prior. Deputy head of the Houthi media, Nasruddin Amer, referred to the drone strike as a 'unique, qualitative military operation,' suggesting more attacks are planned.
In additional developments during this heightened conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli operations in Gaza would press onward despite faltering negotiations with Hamas for a ceasefire. Reports indicate that violence has continued to escalate in Gaza with numerous casualties, including in crowded civilian shelters.
Meanwhile, Hamas officials claimed they would not cease hostilities until an independent Palestinian state is established. As tensions flare, citizens of both Israel and Gaza brace for worsening conditions amid these latest military actions.
