In a recent announcement, the United States Department of Defense revealed that Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi, a detainee at Guantanamo Bay, has been sent back to his home country of Tunisia. This move comes after a diligent interagency evaluation determined he was eligible for transfer. The Pentagon, however, did not disclose any details regarding whether Yazidi accepted any guilt for his actions. The Guantanamo Bay detention facility has been controversial since its inception in 2002, holding what the US identifies as unlawful combatants in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. As part of a naval base located in southeast Cuba, the camp currently houses 26 detainees, with 14 of them deemed eligible for transfer. This successful repatriation marks another step in the US's efforts to decrease the number of detainees, although questions surrounding legal and moral implications continue to linger as the facility remains operational.
