Smokey Robinson Takes Legal Action Against Sexual Assault Allegations
Motown Icon Seeks $500 Million in Defamation Lawsuit Amidst Controversy
Motown icon Smokey Robinson, renowned for his classic hits, has launched a staggering $500 million defamation lawsuit against four former housekeepers who have accused him of sexual assault. Filed on Wednesday in California, both Robinson and his wife, Frances, argue that the allegations are fabricated attempts at extortion. The couple claims that the women, who have chosen to maintain anonymity, enjoyed personal family vacations with them and were treated with respect and kindness.
Robinson's legal counsel has also made efforts to have the women's lawsuit dismissed, challenging their right to anonymity. The 85-year-old singer, who is currently under criminal investigation in Los Angeles, firmly denies all allegations, suggesting that the claims are financially motivated.
The women, identified only as Jane Doe 1, 2, 3, and 4, allege that incidents of sexual misconduct occurred as far back as 2006. They delayed coming forward due to fears of job loss, familial backlash, and potential immigration issues. Seeking a jury trial, they demand a minimum of $50 million in damages.
As the case unfolds, Robinson, celebrated for writing chart-topping hits like "My Girl" and “Tears of a Clown”, has publicly welcomed the investigation, asserting that truth will ultimately prevail. With an extensive music legacy and accolades in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the implications of this lawsuit loom large for both the artist and his career.
