E.U. Leaders Anchor Support for Ukraine Amidst Defense Overhaul
European leaders convene in Brussels to reinforce military support for Ukraine, marking a transformative moment in defense strategy.
In Brussels yesterday, European leaders convened to discuss pivotal measures for bolstering the continent's defenses and ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described this meeting as a “watershed moment” in redefining Europe’s defense posture, particularly in light of reduced reliance on U.S. backing.
To achieve greater military autonomy, a plan proposing 150 billion euros (approximately $160 billion) is under consideration. These funds are earmarked for advancements in missile defense systems, anti-drone technology, and related defense capabilities. Apart from reviewing these defense initiatives, leaders engaged in discussions about a peace plan for Ukraine, including potential troop support and financial assistance.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, who attended the meeting, expressed gratitude for the E.U. support, stating, “We are very thankful that we are not alone.” However, Jeanna Smialek, the Brussels bureau chief, indicated that while there was a strong commitment to stand by Ukraine, Hungary notably abstained from consensus, breaking a unity that has characterized E.U. positions since Russia’s invasion.
In addition to the discussions on military capabilities, U.S. and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet next week in Saudi Arabia to explore potential paths to end the conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron proposed discussions around extending France's nuclear protection to its European partners, highlighting a significant element of collective security in an uncertain geopolitical landscape.
