Three Arrested in Sri Lanka Amid Security Threats to Israeli Tourists
Concerns rise as authorities intensify measures following warnings from the U.S. and Israel.
The Sri Lankan police have made a significant response to potential security threats by arresting three locals believed to be connected to credible risks aimed at Israeli tourists. According to government spokesman Vijitha Herath, authorities have begun interrogating the suspects and indicated that more actions could be forthcoming based on the results of their investigations.
These arrests occurred after travel warnings were issued by the U.S. Embassy and the Israeli National Security Council, advising citizens to stay away from Arugam Bay—well-known for its surfing among tourists. The U.S. warned that they had "received credible information regarding an imminent attack targeting popular tourist destinations in the Arugam Bay area." Consequently, the U.S. placed an immediate travel restriction on its embassy staff in that region.
In parallel, Israel urged its citizens to vacate Arugam Bay and its southern and western coastal locations immediately. They cautioned against any actions that could identify individuals as Israeli, including wearing clothing with Hebrew inscriptions or religious symbols, notably in settings where groups gather.
The British government has also updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka, highlighting an increased risk of terrorist activity. The advisory explicitly mentioned that attacks could occur indiscriminately at locations frequented by foreign nationals, such as hotels and sites of interest.
In response to the escalating threat landscape, Sri Lankan police have bolstered security in major tourist spots, including Colombo, Ella, and Weligama, especially since some Israeli visitors have erected temporary prayer areas in celebration of a Jewish holiday. As investigations unfold, authorities are keen on ensuring the safety of all travelers in the country.
