Apple Implements Unprecedented Discounts on iPhones Amidst Fierce Competition in China
In response to intensifying rivalry from local brands, Apple has announced significant price cuts on select iPhone models for a limited time in China.
Apple, the renowned US technology giant, is implementing a rare promotional discount on several iPhone models in China, where competition from local brands such as Huawei is intensifying. The four-day sale, which kicks off this Saturday, January 4, features discounts reaching up to 500 yuan (approximately $68.50, £55.30) on Apple's latest devices.
The promotion includes discounts not only on recent releases, like the iPhone 16 Pro, which is priced at 7,999 yuan, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, currently at 9,999 yuan, but also on older models. This special offer is partly a response to changing shopping behaviors among Chinese consumers, who are increasingly value-conscious amidst broader economic uncertainties.
“Apple's strategy has shifted to resonate with the evolving preferences of Chinese shoppers,” noted Will Wong, a senior research manager at International Data Corporation (IDC). “The growing trend of value-seeking has made discounts more appealing, and if Apple doesn’t adjust its pricing approach, it risks losing market share.”
The price cuts follow Huawei's recent move to reduce prices on its high-end smartphones by up to 20%, highlighting a broader trend among various sectors in China, from e-commerce to automotive, as companies seek to entice consumers hesitant to spend during a slow economic period.
With the changing market dynamics, Apple's share has faced increased pressure from competing local brands like Vivo and Xiaomi. Recent IDC research indicates that Apple managed to return to China's top five smartphone makers in the third quarter of 2024, after briefly dropping off. However, Vivo claimed the top spot in sales growth, seeing a more than 20% increase, while Apple's sales experienced a marginal decline of 0.3%. Conversely, Huawei saw impressive growth of over 40% in sales since its re-entry into the premium smartphone sector last August, notwithstanding ongoing US-imposed restrictions.
As competition heats up with multiple brands releasing flagship models, analysts remain vigilant about the lengths to which Apple and its rivals will go to capture consumer interest in this vital market.
