Russia has carried out a massive overnight attack on 14 regions of Ukraine, authorities have reported, coinciding with Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.
One fatality was confirmed in the Zaporizhzhia region, with 30 injuries, including children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia launched nearly 540 drones and 45 missiles, urging for tougher sanctions on Moscow.
In response to the attack, Russia's defense ministry claimed that all targets had been struck, although this assertion has not been independently verified.
The latest assault arrives as international efforts to broker peace continue amid the ongoing war, which began with the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Notably, just days prior, Kyiv had experienced one of its largest aerial assaults during the conflict, resulting in significant casualties.
The Dnipropetrovsk region reported heavy bombardment, with damage to infrastructure and at least four injuries attributed to a drone attack. In contrast, Russian advances in eastern Ukraine are narrowing despite high combat casualties.
Ukrainian military operations have also intensified, as they targeted oil refineries in Krasnodar and Syzran, with explosions and fires reported at both sites. Russian authorities confirmed that strikes had occurred, claiming minor damage without casualties.
As tensions rise, European diplomats are meeting in Denmark to discuss further sanctions against Russia, highlighting a commitment to deplete resources that are fueling the war. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's call for stronger international action, emphasizing that Russia's behavior demonstrates their reluctance for peace.
