**Following his release, Tikhanovsky expresses hope for the future while calling for freedom of all political prisoners.**

Sergei Tikhanovsky, the prominent Belarusian opposition figure, has emerged from five harrowing years of solitary confinement in a high-security prison, proclaiming that his spirit remains unbroken. The harsh conditions of his imprisonment left him emaciated and unrecognizable to his daughter, yet he is determined to continue his fight against the repressive regime in Belarus.

In a heartfelt encounter in Vilnius, Tikhanovsky vividly described the challenges of isolation. "The hardest thing wasn't the restriction on movement; it was the inability to speak or communicate," he reflected, emphasizing the need for expression as a vital human experience. His unexpected release came after a rare visit from a US diplomatic delegation, leading to the freedom of 14 political prisoners, alongside Tikhanovsky.

The emotional reunion with his family was bittersweet; he recounted how his young daughter failed to recognize him at first. "She didn't recognize me, but when she did, we hugged for what felt like forever," he said, tears in his eyes.

Since his arrest during the controversial 2020 presidential elections, Tikhanovsky has become a symbol of resistance in Belarus. Initially, he gained popularity as a YouTube blogger by highlighting public grievances before attempting to run for president himself. His subsequent imprisonment sparked widespread protests against dictator Alexander Lukashenko, who has continuously faced criticism for his oppressive rule.

In prison, Tikhanovsky endured appalling conditions, including stints in punishment cells and isolation from the outside world. Despite the physical toll—losing nearly 60 kilograms—he maintains that his resolve has only strengthened. "I've witnessed the regime's atrocities first-hand, and I believe we must continue to fight for justice," he affirmed.

While relieved to be free, Tikhanovsky's thoughts remain with the over 1,000 political prisoners still imprisoned in Belarus. He shared poignant memories of meeting fellow inmates whose appearances had drastically changed due to their prolonged captivity. "We must do everything possible to get them out," he stated, advocating for a united front in the fight against oppression.

His wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, now a leading figure in the Belarusian opposition, echoed his sentiments, urging caution regarding Western sanctions against Lukashenko's regime. "Fourteen released and twenty-eight newly detained is a concerning sign," she noted, insisting on the need for continued international pressure.

As Tikhanovsky begins to reintegrate into society, he is dedicated not only to reconnecting with his family but also to igniting change in Belarus. "I don't seek to reclaim political power. I want a democratic Belarus where everyone has the opportunity to speak freely," he concluded.
