Swedish Rape Inquiry Concludes Without Charges Linked to Kylian Mbappé
The Swedish Prosecution Authority has closed an investigation into alleged rape linked to French football star Kylian Mbappé, citing insufficient evidence.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority has announced the closure of an inquiry into a case of alleged rape, which had drawn media attention connecting it to French football captain Kylian Mbappé. Senior prosecutor Marina Chirakova confirmed that the investigation into an alleged incident that reportedly occurred in Stockholm ended, attributing the decision to insufficient evidence.
Despite the online and media buzz regarding the case, Mbappé was never formally named or notified by the authorities as a suspect. His legal representation had previously stated that he was contemplating pursuing a defamation claim against the reports. Upon the emergence of the allegations in October, Mbappé dismissed the reports as “fake news.”
Chirakova, who oversaw the preliminary investigation, declared the evidence gathered was "not sufficient to proceed further," resulting in the closure of the case. The specifics of the alleged incident involved two cases of sexual harassment and an alleged rape occurring in a hotel in Stockholm on October 10 with multiple Swedish news agencies naming Mbappé as a suspect.
While in the Swedish capital, police visited the Bank hotel where Mbappé was staying, reportedly gathering evidence including clothing. In a recent interview on the French television show Clique, Mbappé proclaimed his lack of involvement in the case. "I haven't received anything, no summons... I'm not involved," he stated.
Mbappé’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, also dismissed the media speculation as defamatory, emphasizing that her client is careful in his actions and consistently avoids precarious situations. While tensions surrounding the inquiry ensued, Mbappé achieved a notable personal milestone by scoring his 50th goal in the UEFA Champions League as a forward for Real Madrid after transferring from Paris Saint-Germain.
Having previously lifted the World Cup trophy in 2018 and becoming part of a star-studded roster at PSG alongside Messi and Neymar, the rise of Mbappé continues in the spotlight as he remains a candidate for prestigious awards like the Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Men's Player.
