Escalation of Conflict: Israel Strikes Back After Houthi Missile Response
Israeli fighter jets struck the international airport in Sana, Yemen, on Tuesday, according to the Israeli military, marking a retaliatory action just two days after the Iran-aligned Houthi militia launched a ballistic missile that landed near Israel’s primary airport. This ongoing confrontation underscores the tensions between Israel and the Houthis, who claim to be supporting Palestinians amidst the Gaza conflict.
The extent of the damage to Sana’s airport remains unknown; however, it serves as a crucial transit point for over 20 million Yemenis living in Houthi-controlled regions. Prior to the airstrike, the Israeli military had warned civilians in the area via social media to evacuate the vicinity of the airport.
On Sunday, a Houthi missile bypassed Israeli defenses, striking near Ben-Gurion International Airport and resulting in injuries to at least six people. This event prompted multiple airlines to cancel flights, and Israeli officials vowed to retaliate. The subsequent Israeli bombardment targeted locations in Hudaydah, a Houthi-controlled port, and nearby facilities, claiming four lives and injuring over thirty others, according to Houthi health authorities.
In response to the strike on Ben-Gurion, the Houthis have announced an "air blockade" against Israel, pledging to persist in targeting Israeli airports, further heightening the conflict between these factions.
