Canada-India Relations: An Evolving Dilemma

In light of Canada's and the U.S.'s serious allegations against India, the historical and political dynamics surrounding the Khalistan movement are under scrutiny.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Canada and the United States have leveled grave accusations against India regarding alleged assassination plots aimed at Sikh separatist leaders residing in North America. This development has posed a perplexing question: what motivates the Indian government to engage in such high-stakes actions?

The longstanding Khalistan movement, seeking an independent Sikh homeland from Punjab, has significantly waned inside India over the years. However, the Indian government continues to portray it as a severe national security risk. Officials argue that activists aligned with the Khalistan campaign are not only promoting a separatist agenda but are also implicated in organized crime within India, including gang warfare, drug trafficking, and extortion — activities they assert are fuelling terrorism masquerading as a political cause.

Ajai Sahni, head of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi, elaborated on the government’s stance, suggesting it seeks to frame various political challenges in Punjab through the lens of terrorism. While acknowledging the presence of genuine activists advocating for Khalistan, Sahni insists that a number of criminals have co-opted the movement, opportunistically aligning themselves with its cause, thus gaining a veneer of respectability.
