President condemns act of hatred following the destruction of a memorial tree honoring Ilan Halimi, a victim of antisemitic violence.
French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed deep condemnation after a memorial tree planted in honor of Ilan Halimi was cut down, referring to it as an “act of hatred.” The olive tree, which had stood for 14 years in Épinay-sur-Seine, served as a poignant tribute to Halimi, who was brutally murdered by a gang in Paris in 2006, an act that rocked the nation. Macron declared that every resource would be employed to identify and penalize the perpetrator of this vandalism, stating, “It is an attempt to kill him a second time.”
Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez has confirmed an active investigation, ensuring all efforts will be made to hold those responsible accountable. Ilan Halimi was a victim of an antisemitic kidnapping; lured by gang members under false pretenses, he endured 24 days of torment before being found dead, a case that horrified the community. The perpetrator, Youssouf Fofana, was sentenced to life imprisonment, underscoring the severity of antisemitism in France.
The local council of Épinay-sur-Seine reported the tree’s destruction, sharing a photo that depicted the memorial severed at the base and discarded in a flowerbed. Macron remarked that “France will not forget this child of France who died because he was Jewish,” reaffirming the nation’s commitment to combating antisemitism. Prime Minister François Bayrou echoed these sentiments, attributing the act to “antisemitic hatred,” and emphasized that no crime can erase the memories tied to such acts of violence. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including the vandalism of a plaque commemorating Halimi, further highlighting ongoing issues with antisemitic sentiments in the country.
