Pope Francis Shows Positive Signs in Hospital Recovery Journey
The Vatican reports improved health for Pope Francis amid his battle with pneumonia.
Pope Francis, aged 88, is reportedly showing signs of improvement after two weeks of battling pneumonia, according to a recent medical update from the Vatican. While he will remain hospitalized due to a "complex clinical picture," the pontiff is currently resting at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, following a "peaceful night." Italian news agency Ansa has indicated that the Pope is no longer in the "critical phase," according to Vatican sources.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after experiencing respiratory difficulties for several days. Initially treated for bronchitis, he later developed pneumonia affecting both lungs. On February 22, the Vatican noted a respiratory crisis that placed him in critical condition; however, subsequent updates revealed he had not encountered further crises.
Following his hospitalization, Pope Francis requested prayers from Catholics due to his inability to perform the traditional Angelus prayer in person for the second consecutive week. Although his health is reportedly improving, the Vatican cautions that additional days of clinical stability are required to accurately assess his prognosis.
Pope Francis's medical history includes vulnerabilities that heighten his risk for pneumonia, such as a past bout with pleurisy and a partial lung removal. Throughout his 12-year papacy, he has been hospitalized multiple times, including a bronchitis treatment in March 2023. Originating from Argentina, he is the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to serve as the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
