South Korea's Aviation Tragedy: 179 Lives Lost in Plane Crash

The devastating accident, involving a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, resulted in the deaths of 179 passengers and crew, prompting an investigation into the causes and the leadership of new interim president, Choi Sang-mok.

 

In a catastrophic event for South Korea, a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed while attempting to land at Muan International Airport, resulting in a harrowing loss of life. Out of the 181 individuals on board, only two survived, marking this incident as the most tragic aviation disaster involving a South Korean airline since the late 1990s.

The flight originated from Bangkok and was approaching the airport when it crash-landed around 9 a.m. local time. Eyewitness accounts captured the plane skidding down the runway on its belly before colliding with a barrier and erupting into flames. While emergency teams were able to rescue two crew members from the tail section, the majority of those on board perished in the fiery wreckage.

Authorities have initiated an in-depth investigation into the events leading up to the crash. Eyewitness reports and a director of aviation policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport revealed that the plane had been warned of a possible bird strike prior to landing. Shortly thereafter, the aircraft issued a distress signal before its tragic descent.
