Karelina, who resided in Los Angeles, was detained during a family visit to Yekaterinburg in early 2024 after the FSB accused her of financing a Ukrainian organization purportedly linked to military operations. She pleaded guilty in August 2024 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, echoing broader themes of the US-Russian geopolitical standoff.
