Escalating Violence in DR Congo: M23 Rebels Advance on Bukavu

Rising chaos and armed conflict spark fears of broader regional warfare in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tensions run high as Bukavu residents face gunfire, looting, and news of potential military escalations from neighboring Uganda.

Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is gripped by turmoil as the M23 rebel group intensifies its offensive in the area. Following the seizure of Goma last month, sporadic gunfire and looting erupted in Bukavu, with residents seeking refuge in their homes amid fears of violence. While the M23 claims to have entered Bukavu, conflicting reports suggest that the situation remains fluid, with the rebel group's recent capture of Kavumu airport north of the city adding to the unrest.

Both the UN and the European Union are expressing grave concern about the escalating conflict, highlighting the urgency of preventing a regional war. Uganda’s army chief has made threats to attack the town of Bunia unless all military forces there surrender, raising alarms that the ongoing tensions could widen. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored the importance of respecting the DRC's sovereignty and territorial integrity during an African Union summit.

The DRC government has accused Rwanda of destabilizing the region for its mineral resources—a claim Rwanda denies. The ongoing violence has displaced hundreds of thousands, causing both humanitarian crises and insecurity. Reports from residents of Bukavu indicate that people are fearful of venturing outdoors due to ongoing gunfire and rampant looting, including at a World Food Programme depot that stores vital food supplies—a situation that compels agencies to suspend operations amid a deepening crisis.

Bukavu, a critical hub on the southern edge of Lake Kivu, holds a population of over a million and is essential to the mineral trade. The extent of M23's control and the implications of its advance on Bukavu remain uncertain, but should the city fall, it would mark a significant increase in territory for the rebels since their resurgence in 2022. Observers warn that the conflict could reignite memories of the devastating wars that swept the region in the 1990s and early 2000s, which resulted in millions of casualties. The eyes of the region are on Bukavu as tensions rise and uncertainty looms.
