Diplomatic Breakthrough: US and Iran Near Nuclear Agreement
President Trump announces progress in negotiations with Iran aimed at reaching a nuclear deal.
In the latest twist of international diplomacy, US President Donald Trump has revealed that Iran has “sort of” come to terms with the conditions for a nuclear deal. Speaking during his Gulf tour in Qatar, Trump emphasized the seriousness of the discussions that took place, which concluded on Sunday, and projected optimism toward achieving "long-term peace."
An adviser to Iran's supreme leader, Ali Shamkhani, made headlines by expressing Iran's readiness to impose strict limitations on its nuclear operations in return for the lifting of US sanctions. While the US maintains that Iran's uranium enrichment must cease to avoid the escalation of nuclear weapon development, Iranian officials stress that their nuclear endeavors are centered on non-military purposes.
Trump’s positive signal regarding the potential treaty could imply a move away from military confrontation, stating, "We're not going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran." He noted that recent discussions are indicative of a nearing agreement, without providing specifics.
Shamkhani confirmed Iran’s willingness to relinquish its highly enriched uranium stockpiles as part of the proposed deal, which hinges on the US easing its sanctions. Following the conclusion of talks, US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions as encouraging, with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeling them “difficult but useful.”
After departing from a prior nuclear agreement in 2018, Trump had warned of possible underlying military actions should these fresh negotiations, which began in April, fall short of success. However, a senior US official stated that the three-hour discussions resulted in a mutual understanding to gear up for further dialogue concerning technical aspects of any prospective agreement, which they anticipate will resume soon.
