Ukraine Repatriates 1,212 Fallen Soldiers in Notable Exchange with Russia
A significant body exchange agreement between Ukraine and Russia sees the return of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers' remains, amidst ongoing peace talks.
Ukraine has announced the repatriation of 1,212 soldiers' bodies from Russia as part of a prisoner swap agreement stemming from recent peace talks. According to Kyiv, the exchange was facilitated with the support of the Red Cross, which played a crucial role in the process. Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky confirmed that Russia received 27 bodies in return, highlighting the disparity in the numbers exchanged.
This development comes amid ongoing negotiations in Turkey, where both sides tentatively agreed to exchange a maximum of 6,000 bodies, along with sick and severely wounded soldiers and those under 25 years old. Medinsky further stated that Russia plans to initiate exchanges for severely injured prisoners starting Thursday.
The Ukrainian coordination center for the treatment of prisoners of war used the platform Telegram to announce that the identities of the deceased would be determined as swiftly as possible. This is not the first instance of body repatriation in the conflict, which has seen thousands of exchanges since it started, with reports indicating over 70 separate repatriation efforts have taken place.
This exchange comes amid allegations from Moscow alleging that Ukraine was slow to collect bodies, with claims that they had been stored in refrigerated trucks awaiting transfer since the previous weekend. Conversely, Ukraine accused Russia of "dirty tricks" and manipulating the situation.
The initial round of exchanges sparked emotional reunions, as families of missing Ukrainian soldiers gathered at the Belarus border, seeking news from returning soldiers about their loved ones. However, neither side disclosed the total number of exchanged personnel during this phase. Family members of the missing continue to hope that an eventual peace will bring them resolution and reunification.
