Thousands Unite in Historic Māori Protests Against Controversial Treaty Bill

A massive hīkoi in Wellington culminates in a historic call for indigenous rights and unity.

More than 40,000 New Zealanders gathered in Wellington to protest a contentious bill aiming to redefine the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding Māori rights in a multicultural society.

The hīkoi, marking the culmination of a nine-day protest, saw thousands march to the New Zealand Parliament, uniting diverse voices against the proposed legislation perceived as a threat to Māori rights. The controversial Treaty Principles bill, introduced by a junior coalition member, aims to reinterpret the essential 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, sparking significant debate among the public and lawmakers alike.

Participants draped in Māori flags formed one of the largest demonstrations in New Zealand's history, surpassing even past rallies for land and sea rights. The event highlighted the increasing concern over indigenous rights under the current government. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and coalition partner David Seymour faced criticism for their positions and comments regarding the proposed bill, with calls for unity among all New Zealanders ringing throughout the protest.

Activists insisted the fight is for a shared future, as the protesters asserted that Māori rights cannot be compromised, signaling a collective demand for equal treatment and respect for indigenous identity and heritage. Prominent Māori leaders emphasized that true equality cannot exist while the indigenous community suffers inequalities, urging solidarity in the fight for rights.

The atmosphere turned electric as MPs performed a haka inside the Beehive in opposition to the bill, symbolizing a cultural renaissance and awakening among those advocating for Māori rights. As conversations regarding the treaty’s interpretation continue, the hīkoi has sparked nationwide dialogues about identity, rights, and the value of unity in diversity.
