**Scot Embraces Dream Role as Isle's Lighthouse Guardian in Australia**

**Sandy Duthie's adventurous journey brings him to a life of solitude and beauty on Gabo Island.**

**A Scottish man's dream becomes a reality as he takes on the role of lighthouse keeper on a picturesque Australian island, surrounded by nature and unique wildlife.**

Sandy Duthie, a 42-year-old from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has realized his dream of becoming a lighthouse keeper on the scenic Gabo Island, located off the coast of Victoria, Australia. When the previous keeper announced his retirement after 25 years, Sandy seized the opportunity to become the island's caretaker—undoubtedly a drastic change from his former life as an arborist.

Five years ago, Sandy and his partner, Brodie Gaudion, found themselves enamored with Australia during a three-month holiday. Their visit to the charming Gabo Island two years prior sparked Sandy's desire to one day inhabit the lighthouse and its storied past. Now, in his month-on, month-off role, he shares the remote locale with a lively community of little penguins and other splendid wildlife, including dolphins and sea eagles.

Gabo Lighthouse, a historical structure erected over 160 years ago, had been tended to by its previous custodian, Leo op den Brouw, who spent considerable time in solitude on the island. Once Leo opted for family life on the mainland, Sandy, who had long dreamed of this opportunity, successfully applied for the position through Parks Victoria while competing with another employed keeper.

Sandy embarked on this journey with hopes of creating a unique existence surrounded by nature’s wonders. Access to the island is through a small boat charter, susceptible to unpredictable weather making the trips both exhilarating and challenging. During his tenure, he quickly adapted to the rhythm of daily responsibilities, which span from weather observation to essential maintenance and cleaning.

Though the job brings ample wildlife encounters—around 30 whales swimming by some days—the isolation can be daunting. Sandy candidly discusses the occasional lonely aspects, humorously likening the remoteness to "living on Alcatraz," as family visits are limited by weather conditions and boat accessibility.

Despite the hurdles, Sandy expresses happiness in his solitary role, stating, “It is 100% a dream job. For me it’s perfect,” which marks an evolution from his past endeavors in Scotland. Through his research, he has unearthed a strong Scottish heritage connected to the lighthouse-building history on Gabo, finding joy in this intangible link to his own roots.

As Sandy savors this once-in-a-lifetime experience, he reflects on the challenges of social re-entry into perfectly normal life on the mainland, embracing the harmonious balance of solitude and natural beauty at his newfound home.
